The City of Kimberley, B.C. has reached two major milestones towards construction of its wastewater treatment plant project.
Registration under B.C.’s Municipal Wastewater Regulation (MWR) has been received, a City of Kimberley release said, which formally authorizes the city’s wastewater treatment facility under provincial standards and confirms that the province has reviewed and accepted the City’s wastewater system design, environmental protections, and operational plans.
The registration replaces the city’s operating permit and allows the facility to be constructed and operated provided it complies with MWR’s performance standards, monitoring requirements, and environmental safeguards to protect public health and the receiving environment.
The project, first announced on Dec 4., 2023, is jointly funded with combined investment commitments of more than $90.6 million by the federal government, the province of British Columbia and the City of Kimberley.
The building permit application has been submitted, with approval expected in late March. Construction remains on schedule to begin in April 2026, and the treatment plant is projected to be fully operational in 2028, the release said.
