The Government of Yukon announced that the construction of two new drinking water reservoirs to replace the existing reservoirs in the City of Dawson has been completed.
The project included preliminary and detailed design, construction of the new reservoirs and the demolition of the existing reservoirs and pumphouse.
The new water reservoirs increase the City of Dawson’s water storage capacity by more than 3.6 million litres, meeting the community’s fire flow and potable water needs for expected growth.
“The new water reservoirs are completed, replacing the smaller aging ones at the same location. These upgraded reservoirs provide the increased water volumes required to safely protect major structures such as the new hospital and the seniors residence. Their completion strengthens our community’s fire response capacity and supports long term public safety. We are grateful for the support of the Yukon government in making these new reservoirs possible. The Yukon government continues to be a strong and reliable partner for Dawson and this project is another example of what we can accomplish together. We are grateful to the governments of Yukon and Canada for their investment in the long-term health, safety and growth of Dawson,” said City of Dawson Mayor Stephen Johnson.
The project was supported through the federal government’s Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program. The Government of Canada contributed $7.35 million and the Government of Yukon contributed $3.18 million.
“Investing in reliable water infrastructure is essential to building strong, resilient communities. The completion of these new water reservoirs strengthens Dawson’s drinking water system, increases storage capacity and supports the city’s future development. This project demonstrates what can be achieved when governments work together to invest in infrastructure that supports residents today and prepares communities for tomorrow,” said Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Northern and Arctic Affairs and MP for the Yukon Dr. Brendan Hanley.
The two new water reservoirs replace the old reservoirs built in 1978.

We appreciate having the Government of Canada’s support in this work and thank them for their continued investments into Yukon infrastructure,” said Minister of Community Services Cory Bellmore.
The governments of Canada and Yukon committed funding to replace the Dawson water reservoirs in 2021.
