The federal government and the Northwest Territories have announced the renewal of the Canada Community-Building Fund (CCBF), ensuring sustained investment in critical infrastructure, including water and wastewater services. Under the agreement, the Northwest Territories will receive $94.5 million over the first five years, delivering long-term and stable funding to communities across the region.
The CCBF has already driven significant improvements across the Northwest Territories, such as water and sewer upgrades in the Town of Hay River, alongside various road and highway rehabilitation projects. Over the next decade, this renewed funding will support similar vital projects while addressing local housing and infrastructure priorities.
Michael McLeod, Member of Parliament for the Northwest Territories, underscored the significance of the investment, stating, “This funding is essential to building affordable and inclusive communities for residents to live, work, play, and raise families, while protecting the environment.”
Vince McKay, Minister of Municipal and Community Affairs for the Northwest Territories, highlighted the value of this ongoing collaboration: “Programs like the Canada Community-Building Fund are an essential part of ensuring the long-term sustainability of all communities in the NWT. The Government of the Northwest Territories is proud of our partnership with the Government of Canada to develop strong viable community infrastructure and enable community governments to better meet the needs of their residents.”
The federal government has committed $26.7 billion to the CCBF over the next decade, ensuring continued support for core infrastructure projects nationwide. By prioritizing essential services like water, wastewater, roads, and public transit, this funding will play a critical role in the resilience and growth of local communities across Canada.
With its focus on infrastructure that supports both housing and essential services, the renewed CCBF will help communities in the Northwest Territories build for the future while ensuring access to clean water, safe transportation, and improved public services.
