With provincial representatives and municipal leaders, St. Clari Township officially broke ground on the Courtright Wastewater Treatment Plant Expansion project.
This essential expansion is funded in part by a significant $33,872,000 investment from the Government of Ontario’s Municipal Housing Infrastructure Program’s Housing-Enabling Water Systems Fund (MHIP-HEWSF) and will enable wastewater system capacity for 624 new housing units, while also increasing capacity to support future economic development and industrial investment throughout the Township.
“Through our government’s $4 billion Municipal Housing Infrastructure Program, we are protecting Ontario by investing in local infrastructure that drives economic growth, creates jobs and strengthens communities,” said Todd McCarthy, Ontario’s Acting Minister of Infrastructure. “For the Township of St. Clair, this project will help enable 624 new homes and support long-term growth within the community”.
The project will be led by North America Construction (1993) Ltd. and WSP Canada, along with partners at Colliers and B.M. Ross.
Preliminary work will begin this month, with the project expected to last 22 months.
“Today’s groundbreaking is an important moment for St. Clair Township and the broader Sarnia-Lambton region,” said Bob Bailey, MPP for Sarnia-Lambton. “Not only will this investment by the Ontario government help to get new homes built, but it will also create significant new wastewater system capacity to support large-scale industrial development in St. Clair Township in the years ahead.”
The Courtright Wastewater Treatment Plant provides treatment for residential wastewater and pre-treated industrial flows from the communities of Corunna, Mooretown and Courtright. The facility currently operates at a rated capacity of 6,000 m³/d (cubic metres per day). This expansion project will occur over three phases to provide an ultimate design capacity of 15,000 m³/d.
“This investment in the Courtright Wastewater Treatment Plant reflects our commitment to future residential and industrial growth — providing strong, sustainable, and critical infrastructure for years to come,” said St. Clair Township Mayor Jeff Agar. “We want to thank our provincial partners and all those involved in helping this important project move forward.”
