The City of Iqaluit’s new water reservoir could be ready by 2031 according to a presentation to city councillors on April 26.
City of Iqaluit director of engineering and capital projects updated Iqaluit’s city council virtually about the new reservoir but had to cut his presentation short due to technical difficulties, a report from Nunatsiaq News said.
The new reservoir is planned to be built next to the existing Lake Geraldine water source and is currently in a review process through the Nunavut Impact Review Board, Department of Fisheries and Oceans, and Nunavut Water Board.
The city council’s agenda indicated construction of the reservoir is scheduled to bein in fall 2026.
The reservoir is part of a $214 million federal funding initiative announced in 2022 to upgrade the city’s water system.
Iqaluit has also completed expansion of a utilidor along Federal Road and upgrades to pipelines on Astro Hill, the Nunatsiaq News report said.
A do-not-consume order was issued in Oct. 2021 for the city’s water supply when fuel was discovered in the water supply and Iqaluit has experienced water shortages in recent years due to drought conditions.
