ST. GEORGE, Ont. — The federal and Ontario governments are investing an additional $9 million into the Ontario Agricultural Sustainability Initiative to help farmers enhance long-term soil health, water quality, and productivity. The funding, provided through the Sustainable Canadian Agricultural Partnership, aims to support the adoption of new technologies and best management practices that improve sustainability and energy efficiency on farms.
“Farmers care deeply about the environment, and this investment will help them adapt to environmental challenges for future success,” said federal Agriculture Minister Lawrence MacAulay.
The initiative allows Ontario farmers to apply for up to two projects, with successful applicants receiving up to $90,000 per project, depending on the category.
“This forward-thinking program aligns with our Grow Ontario Strategy,” said Rob Flack, Ontario’s Minister of Agriculture, Food and Agribusiness. “We encourage farmers to seize this opportunity to improve their soil health, food production, and long-term competitiveness.”
The program will be delivered by the Ontario Soil and Crop Improvement Association (OSCIA). Phil Oegema, OSCIA president, noted that the initiative supports responsible economic management of soil, water, air, and crops.
The Sustainable Canadian Agricultural Partnership is a five-year, $3.5 billion investment by federal, provincial, and territorial governments to boost the competitiveness and resilience of Canada’s agricultural sector.
