Ontario invests more than $6.9 million in municipal water infrastructure

The government of Ontario is investing more than $6.9 million in municipal infrastructure in two southern Ontario towns.

The provincial government will put $6,455,937 towards building critical wastewater infrastructure in the Town of Gananoque as well as $506,437 for critical wastewater infrastructure in the Town of Prescott.

Funding for both projects is through Ontario’s Municipal Housing Infrastructure Program’s Health and Safety Water Stream (MHIP-HSWS, a release from Leeds-Grenville-Thousand Islands and Rideau Lakes provincial MPP Steve Clark said.

“This project will modernize Gananoque’s wastewater system, helping to protect the environment while supporting new housing and economic growth,” said MPP Clark. “I’ve worked closely with our local municipalities to secure the funding they need to replace critical infrastructure without putting the full cost on property taxpayers and water system users. To date, our government has invested over $91 million in Leeds and Grenville through the Municipal Housing Infrastructure Program,” Clark said at an event at Gananoque Town Hall.

“By reducing the direct cost to ratepayers, the government is enhancing housing affordability for the residents of Gananoque while at the same time setting conditions for future housing growth and protecting the environment,” Gananoque mayor John Beddows said.

Clark announced the Town of Prescott funding at a separate event at Prescott Town Hall.

“This funding helps ensure Prescott’s water treatment plant can continue operating during extreme weather events, providing clean, safe drinking water to residents,” he said.

“This funding will allow the Town of Prescott to strengthen flood protection measures and replace a critical generator at our water treatment plant, ensuring the system remains operational during power outages and extreme weather events. These upgrades are essential to protecting public safety and maintaining reliable access to clean drinking water for our residents,” Prescott mayor Guari Shankar said.
