York Region has announced that it either met or exceeded the required parameters for drinking water quality established in its Safe Drinking Water Act of 2002 for 2016.
In its 2016 Drinking Water Report, the Region summarizes the management of its drinking water systems, describes procedures, reporting, and adverse water test results. Of 18,489 laboratory analyzed tests, the Region had only 25 adverse test results, 14 due to sodium, 4 microbiological, 4 inorganic, and 3 non-regulated organic. None of the adverse water quality events were non-compliance occurrences, according to its report. Some are the result of expanded reporting, which allowed the municipality better timelines to respond to potential challenges in managing water quality, ultimately avoiding non-compliance events.
“York Region’s water operations staff work 24/7 to keep our drinking water systems operating safely and in compliance with Ontario’s strict drinking water regulations,” said York Region chairman and CEO Wayne Emmerson. “The high scores achieved are a direct result of ongoing training, monitoring and testing and demonstrates our commitment to continually improve drinking water operations.”
The 2016 Drinking Water Systems Report summarizes how York Region’s drinking water systems are managed in order to keep drinking water safe, along with water quantity and quality results. In 2016, over 31 million online analyzer readings were recorded to confirm the quality of Regional tap water.
“York Region continues to work with our nine local cities and towns to distribute high quality drinking water,” said City of Vaughan Regional Councillor Mario Ferri, chair of Environmental Services. “Protecting our water from source to tap and back to the source again allows residents to drink a glass of tap water with confidence.”
In 2015 and 2016 York Region ranked first in the Greater Toronto Area in the Ontario Chief Drinking Water Inspector’s Annual Report. Indeed, York Region has not issued a boil water advisory in more than a decade due to excellent water quality and diligent operational management.
Under the Safe Drinking Water Act, 2002, York Region reports annually on the quality and quantity of drinking water produced. It is one component of a multi-barrier approach which also includes source water protection, operator training, water treatment, extensive monitoring and testing, as well as emergency preparedness.
