QUEBEC CITY – About 35 per cent of Quebec City residents are being asked to restrict their water consumption for at least 10 days while crews work to repair a major water supply main break.

Quebec mayor Bruno Marchand, during a news conference on June 21, said crews were working to pinpoint the break in the Les Rivieres suburb. Since then, crews found the leak and work began on June 26. The supply is expected to be back online by July 5. The broken feeder main supplies about 170,000 people with saleable water.

The City said fines of up to $2,000 will be given to residents found using water wastefully, which includes watering lawns, washing vehicles, or filling swimming pools.

Citizens are also being asked to monitor their tap water quality, and should report any cloudy or discoloured water to the city by calling 311.
