The Ontario government is investing up to $18.3 million to construct nearly 4,000 new homes in Prince Edward County. The funding, delivered through the Housing-Enabling Water Systems Fund, is part of a broader initiative to develop, repair, and expand essential water infrastructure to support new housing development.
The County of Prince Edward will use the funds to build the Wellington Regional Water Treatment Plant, which will replace the existing plants in Wellington and Picton. The new facility will deliver clean water to local residents, supporting the area’s growing population and unlocking more housing opportunities.
“We’re working with our municipal partners here in Prince Edward County and across Ontario to get more homes built faster,” said Premier Doug Ford. “With billions of dollars in investments in housing-enabling infrastructure, our government is helping get more shovels in the ground to keep the dream of homeownership alive and help families find a home that meets their needs and budgets.”
The funding is part of a larger $970-million Housing-Enabling Water Systems Fund, which supports municipalities in developing water, wastewater, and stormwater infrastructure essential for housing growth.
Prince Edward County Mayor Steve Ferguson emphasized the importance of the project, stating, “We are desperate for a more diverse mix of housing in our community, and we will only get that if the municipality can expand its drinking water service to support development. We are pleased the Government of Ontario understands our vision and is willing to invest in Prince Edward County.”
The Ontario government has also allocated an additional $250 million to the fund, bringing the total investment to $1.2 billion. This round of funding is open to municipalities, with $120 million reserved for small, rural, and northern communities.
“This investment is crucial for supporting the construction of new housing while ensuring that water, wastewater, and stormwater systems are equipped to handle the demands of a growing population,” said Nadia Todorova, Executive Director of the Residential and Civil Construction Alliance of Ontario.
The new infrastructure will support the construction of 3,895 new homes in Prince Edward County, which is experiencing increased demand for housing as the population grows.
