Canada and NB invest in a new wastewater treatment facility in Rothesay

The Governments of Canada and New Brunswick, in partnership with the Town of Rothesay, have announced a joint investment of more than $28 million in two projects to build a new wastewater treatment facility in Rothesay and expand municipal water, wastewater, and stormwater service to allow for new housing development.

The first investment supports the second phase of construction (phase 2B) for the new wastewater treatment facility on Maliseet Drive. The new facility will use ultraviolet disinfection which will increase the municipality’s capacity to treat and manage its wastewater. An earlier phase of this project (phase 2A) was announced in 2021.

“Our government is proud to support these two major water, wastewater, and stormwater infrastructure projects in Rothesay. The expanded wastewater treatment capacity, and the pipes to transport that wastewater, will ensure that Rothesay can continue to build the homes needed for current and future generations,” said Wayne Long, MP for Saint John-Kennebecasis.

The second project involves the installation of 1 kilometre each of water, wastewater, and stormwater pipes in order to facilitate the construction of the Legacy Village seniors’ housing development on Villa Madonna Road. This new infrastructure will enable the construction of up to 89 housing units. This project is part of the Governments of Canada and New Brunswick’s funding agreement that is paving the way for the construction of more homes to support a growing population.

“This investment means that the people who built this community, who raised their families here and gave so much to this town, can stay right here as they enter the next chapter of their lives. We listened to our seniors, we’re committed to doing the work, and today we’re delivering. We’re proud to have the Governments of Canada and New Brunswick standing with us.” said Matt Alexander, Mayor of the Town of Rothesay.

For phase 2B of the wastewater treatment facility, the federal government is investing $10,200,000 through the Green Infrastructure Stream (GIS) of the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program. The Government of New Brunswick is investing $8,499,150 and the Town of Rothesay is contributing $6,800,850.

For the water, wastewater, and stormwater infrastructure at Legacy Village, the federal government is investing $1,401,775 through the Provincial and Territorial Agreement stream of the Canada Housing Infrastructure Fund (CHIF), while the Government of New Brunswick is investing $934,423 and the Town of Rothesay is contributing $467,352.
