Surrey, B.C. awards $11.6 million contract for new water mains

Surrey, B.C.’s city council has approved a $11.6-million contract to install new water mains and upgrade 24 Ave in South Surrey to support future housing.

The project includes two kilometres of new water mains along 24 Avenue (166 Street to 172 Street) and 172 Street (24 Avenue to 20 Avenue), serving Grandview Heights’ neighbourhoods including Darts Hill and Redwood Heights, a City of Surrey release said.

“As Surrey continues to grow, it’s essential that we invest in the infrastructure needed to deliver more homes and support complete communities in our city. These upgrades will ease pressure on our roads and provide reliable water services for current and future residents,” Surrey mayor Brenda Locke said.

The contract also includes coordinated upgrades along 24 Avenue to improve safety and traffic flow, including widening from two to four lanes, with pedestrian and cycling paths, between the 16500 Block and 168 Street as well as widening from two to three lanes, with the additional lane, as well as pedestrian and cycling paths, on the north side, between 168 Street and 172 Street.

Construction is expected to begin in July and be completed in summer 2027, the release said.
