National workforce initiative proposed to strengthen U.S. water infrastructure

Veolia, the Water Environment Federation (WEF) and the American Water Works Association (AWWA) launched the Veolia Workforce Academy North America on Feb. 5.

The initiative is a free, fully digital workforce training and employment pathway program.

Veolia Workforce Academy North America, is now open at academy.veolia.us, and according to a Veolia release “removes barriers to entry for people to learn technical skills and prepare for the state certifications necessary to enter and advance a career in the industry.”

People need meaningful jobs, water and wastewater providers need good workers, and America needs a strong water system,” Veolia North America CEO Nadège Petit said. “Veolia Workforce Academy North America satisfies all these important goals and shows how providing environmental security builds strong, resilient and healthy communities. “

“As part of our global GreenUp commitment to supporting our communities, we are proud to sponsor this initiative and to train and upskill the next generation of water workers to help the entire industry recruit the driving forces they need,” they added.

The training available is a partnership between Veolia, which provides water, wastewater and related services to more than 18 million people in the United States, the AWWA representing 50,000 members and more than 4,300 water and wastewater utilities in North America and the WEF, the release said.

“Coming together on this series of courses allows us to empower more operators with the skills they need today. Attracting people to the water sector and helping to train and strengthen the water workforce are critical parts of our work leading the transformation to a circular water economy,” WEF executive director Ralph Exton said.

We can’t deliver safe, reliable water and protect the environment without a trained and committed water workforce. AWWA’s Water 2050 initiative sees partnerships exactly like this one with Veolia and WEF as key to building talent pipelines and assuring a sustainable water future,” AWWA CEO David LaFrance added.
