Vancouver begins $20M sewer upgrade and streetscape improvements in Marpole

The City of Vancouver has launched a $20-million project to replace aging combined sewer infrastructure in the Marpole neighbourhood, part of the city’s effort to eliminate Combined Sewer Outflows (CSOs) by 2050.

Construction began last week along Granville Street between West 59th Avenue and West 64th Avenue, with additional work planned for sections of West 59th Avenue and West 62nd Avenue. The upgrades will see the installation of separated sewer pipes designed to accommodate population growth and heavier rainfall linked to climate change. Work is expected to be complete by spring 2026.

“Our investment in infrastructure and public spaces reflects our commitment to supporting the livability and vibrancy of this bustling neighbourhood, today and in the future,” said Vancouver Mayor Ken Sim. “By upgrading aging sewer infrastructure, through projects like this one, we’re making a critical investment in our city’s long-term sustainability and resilience.”

In addition to sewer upgrades, Marpole will receive streetscape improvements through the City’s Uplifting Communities Fund, which was approved by Council in July 2024. Enhancements will include sidewalk rehabilitation, electrical upgrades, new tree planting and updated litter bins.

The city is warning residents to expect significant traffic disruptions on Granville Street during construction. Most weekday work will occur overnight between 8 p.m. and 5 a.m., with lanes reduced to one lane in each direction. Weekend work at key intersections will occasionally run continuously from Friday evening to Monday morning to accelerate the schedule. Traffic control personnel and Vancouver Police Department officers will be on site to manage traffic and pedestrian safety.
