European construction company STRABAG Inc. has been awarded a new tunnelling contract to build a 15-kilometre wastewater tunnel in The Regional Municipality of York, in the Greater Toronto Area, for $290 million.

The works comprise of the tunnel with 16 shafts and various bio-filters to clean the air and remove odours, as well as the upgrade of a nearby three-kilometre stretch of road. Tunnelling will be performed using four Caterpillar Tunnelling Canada Corporation tunnel boring machines with a diameter of 3.6 metres, provided by the client.

Recently, STRABAG completed boring a 10-kilometre tunnel beneath Niagara Falls.
