Ontario Power Generation to adopt AI-driven streamflow forecasting

Ontario Power Generation (OPG) will use artificial intelligence to improve streamflow forecasting across its hydroelectric operations following a competitive request-for-proposals process that selected U.S.-based Upstream Tech.

The Massachusetts company will provide its HydroForecast technology to OPG, Ontario’s largest clean energy producers, which generates about half of the province’s electricity through a mix of sources that includes hydro power.

The agreement will see Upstream Tech work with OPG’s water resource managers to train and deploy forecasts tailored to Ontario watersheds. The technology is expected to support daily operations, planning, and long-term resource management.

According to the company, HydroForecast has demonstrated strong performance in industry benchmarking and can integrate with existing operational tools. For OPG, the system will be calibrated with province-specific watershed data to address the challenges of water resource management in Ontario.

Marshall Moutenot, CEO of Upstream Tech, said the partnership highlights the growing role of advanced analytics in the energy sector. “This collaboration will help bring leading-edge solutions to the critically important work OPG does to help power Ontario,” he said in a statement.

The initiative reflects a broader shift toward digital solutions aimed at strengthening grid reliability, operational efficiency, and sustainable water management in Canada’s energy industry.
