Newfoundland and Labrador has announced a $10.6 million Municipal Capital Works investment as a part of its three-year municipal infrastructure program.
As a result of the funding, 48 communities will cost-share projects to improve water and wastewater systems, roads, and community-oriented infrastructure. The municipal share in these projects will be over $4 million.
“Our government is investing in infrastructure projects which communities have indicated are a priority for them,” said Eddie Joyce, Newfoundland and Labrador’s Minister of Municipal Affairs and Environment. “Through our three-year municipal infrastructure program, we are working to improve access to water and wastewater systems, as well as promote regional collaboration and sharing of services.”
Water and wastewater infrastructure projects include:
- Watermain extension
- Hydrants and water/sewer extensions
- Water and sewer feasibility study
- Sewer system study
- Portable water dispensing unit
- Water/Sewer chamber separation
- Breakwater upgrades
- Stormwater infiltration investigation
As a part of Budget 2017, Premier Ball also announced that $18.8 million in provincial funding is being committed to leverage an additional $12.7 million in federal funding under the multi-year Small Communities Fund of the New Building Canada Fund. Through The Way Forward, the provincial government has committed to leverage federal funding, and this funding will result in total project values of approximately $42.9 million.
“We’re glad to see the Provincial Government once again leveraging as much federal infrastructure funding as possible. Municipal infrastructure is an important investment in the future of our communities and regions,” said Tony Keats, president, Municipalities Newfoundland and Labrador.
In addition, the Provincial Government continues to work with the Federal Government on the details of the second phase of the Investing in Canada Plan which is anticipated to be announced in the coming months. Approximately $555.9 million over 10 years has been allocated to Newfoundland and Labrador for cost shared projects under that program.
