ST. JOHN’S, N.L. — Premier Dr. Andrew Furey announced Newfoundland and Labrador as Canada’s first Well-Being Province on September 23, 2024, placing a significant focus on access to safe and clean water as a key pillar of the province’s well-being strategy.

As part of the declaration, the provincial government is committed to improving the overall health and well-being of residents by addressing the social determinants of health—factors that influence quality of life, including access to clean water, safe housing, financial security, and education.

“Safe, clean water is fundamental to our residents’ health and a cornerstone of our well-being approach,” Premier Furey said. “By prioritizing access to clean water, alongside other critical social determinants, we will improve health outcomes and reduce pressure on our health care system.”

The province has already implemented initiatives aimed at improving water quality, including investments in water infrastructure and programs that ensure long-term access to safe drinking water in both urban and rural communities. These efforts are part of broader initiatives, such as the province’s Poverty Reduction Plan and the Seniors’ Health and Well-Being Plan, which address the wider factors that influence health.

As part of its commitment to the well-being of its residents, Newfoundland and Labrador has also introduced new family care teams, disability benefits, and increased access to child care and accessible housing—all while maintaining clean water access as a priority for healthier communities.

Over the course of Well-Being Week, residents are encouraged to participate in educational events across the province, learning how essential resources like clean water contribute to their overall health and well-being.

“Becoming Canada’s first Well-Being Province marks a critical step forward in achieving our goal of becoming one of the healthiest provinces by 2031,” Furey added. “Placing clean water access at the forefront of our well-being strategy strengthens our resolve in building healthier, more resilient communities.”
