Community submissions sought for World Water Day celebration

Brock’s Rankin Family Pavilion will be awash with artwork and exhibits to mark the University’s second annual World Water Day Celebration on Friday, March 21.

Members of the Brock and wider communities are invited to take part in the event, hosted by Brock’s Environmental Sustainability Research Centre (ESRC), as part of Brock’s 60th anniversary celebrations.

Brock staff, faculty members and students are also invited to contribute research highlights, educational exhibits, course projects and artistic displays to help the event reflect all of the work being done at and around Brock to raise awareness and understanding of the precious resource.

Submissions are due by Friday, March 7 and can be made online. Please note that students interested in submitting a research poster may have the cost of printing covered by indicating this preference on the submission form.

Event organizer Julia Baird, Associate Professor and Director of the ESRC and Brock’s Water Resilience Lab, says it’s important to take a day to celebrate the good things related to water protection happening at the University and across Niagara.

“The first time we held this event we were unsure of what to expect for participation and turnout on the event day,” she says. “It was such a great experience and turned out even better than we had hoped, so I’m really excited to see folks return and share more of what they’ve been doing over the past year — and to see new students, faculty and organizations participate.”

The celebration will make a splash by highlighting water-focused research, learning opportunities and community action through an array of student posters, art exhibits, community organization tables and more.

New this year is a special guest speaker who will specifically address the World Water Day theme of glacier preservation. Details on the talk will be shared on the event website in the coming weeks.

The World Water Day Celebration runs from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in Rankin Family Pavilion on Friday, March 21. Displays will be available for viewing all day and interactive community booths will be open between 11:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m., with the special guest lecture planned to take place over the lunch hour. Attendees can also enter a draw to win a $100 gift card from Outdoors Oriented.

Baird hopes everyone in the Brock community will mark their calendars to attend.

“Water is such an integral part of our lives, especially in Niagara where we are surrounded by the Great Lakes and Niagara River, but often we don’t give it the spotlight it deserves,” she says. “This is a chance to take a moment and appreciate not only the incredible water-focused work, art, courses and research happening at Brock and in the region, but also how we are intricately connected with water.”

The event is sponsored by the Faculty of Social Sciences Dean’s Discretionary Fund, which provides for printing of student posters as well as parking fees for community partners.
