Town of Canmore celebrates new water treatment plant

The Town of Canmore, along with its partners celebrated opening of town’s second water treatment plant.

While the previous facility served Canmore well for many years, it no longer met the needs of our growing community. The new $24 million, modern facility now provides approximately 60 per cent of Canmore’s drinking water, serving residents, businesses, and visitors alike.

To put the scale of this facility into perspective, the previous plant treated more than 1.4 million cubic metres of water in a year, enough to fill roughly 580 Olympic-sized swimming pools. This new facility can meet that demand today while providing capacity for tomorrow.

Project partners included: EPCOR, CIMA+, Chandos Construction, and TransAlta.

Located beside the Rundle Forebay, the plant treats surface water from mountain snowmelt and supplies drinking water to the west side of the Trans-Canada Highway, including Harvie Heights, Deadman’s Flats, and northwest Canmore. The new facility was constructed directly above an existing reservoir, adjacent to the existing Canmore Pumphouse No 2., which remained fully operational throughout construction, with only brief planned interruptions during critical tie-ins.

Built to the National Energy Code of Canada for Buildings, the plant features solar panels and energy-efficient systems to reduce environmental impact while supporting long-term community sustainability.
