The government of Ontario announced a $4.8 million grant application approval on Feb. 18 to make significant improvements to the Township of Ignace, ON’s water and wastewater facility infrastructure.
Ontario will contribute a maximum of $4,827,125 through the Health and Safety Water Infrastructure Project under the Municipal Housing Infrastructure Program (MHIP) towards the total eligible costs of the project, a Township of Ignace release said.
The project responds to identified operational and lifecycle risks associated with existing infrastructure, the release added.
“this funding is so critical for the ongoing safe operation, upgrades and repairs that we need to make to the wastewater facility in this community, in order that we can move forward with other key housing and commercial developments associated to the proposed growth around the upcoming NWMO developments. It truly is a blessing that the Ontario government recognizes the importance of these key infrastructure projects and is assisting us with funding that we would otherwise have to had increase taxes,” Township of Ignace mayor Kim Baigrie said.
The government funding represents 73 per cent of the total required which will be matched by an additional 27 per cent from the Township ($1.8 M) to be utilized to update, repair and stabilize the wastewater treatment facility, the release said.
Funding will be also utilized to add a UV Disinfection system to assist the facility to chlorinate and dechlorinate the water, making the entire system work more efficiently and an engineering report will be conducted to bring forward recommendations on the complete upgrade of the wastewater treatment facility in the near future, the release said.
