Calgary-based FREDsense raises $7M to expand rapid PFAS testing technology

FREDsense Technologies Corp. has secured US $7 million in Series A financing to scale up its rapid testing tools aimed at tracking per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), often referred to as “forever chemicals.”

The funding round was led by Indianapolis-based HG Ventures, with participation from Emerald Technology Ventures.

FREDsense has developed what it calls the first commercially available field-based detector for PFAS. The company says the portable device allows water utilities, industrial operators and environmental service providers to detect contamination in hours instead of waiting weeks for lab results.

“Our mission is simple: make PFAS testing fast, accessible, and actionable,” said David Lloyd, CEO of FREDsense, in a statement. “With support from HG Ventures and Emerald, we’ll expand production, deepen customer support, and continue improving our product so more sites can get answers on the spot.”

PFAS are a class of synthetic chemicals that persist in the environment and have been linked to health concerns. The substances are increasingly the target of regulation in Canada, the United States and globally.

Early adopters of the FRED-PFAS™ detector include firms in water and wastewater treatment, energy, and general industrial operations. The company says the device helps field teams identify hotspots, verify cleanups and optimize treatment systems more efficiently and at a lower cost.

“Communities and companies need cleaner water, faster answers, and fewer delays,” said Ginger Rothrock, senior director at HG Ventures. “FREDsense puts lab-level insight into the hands of field teams, which is exactly what this moment requires.”

Clayton MacDougald, investment director at Emerald, has also joined FREDsense’s board of directors. He said same-day PFAS results allow companies to make better decisions, finish remediation projects faster and reduce costs.

The Calgary-based company says it is positioning itself in a market where PFAS management intersects with environmental urgency, public health, regulatory enforcement and economic opportunity.

FREDsense specializes in water quality testing tools designed for field deployment. Its technology is aimed at helping clients accelerate remediation projects and ensure regulatory compliance.
