About The Project
THE FIRST phase of upgrades to the Winkler system includes building a new mechanical wastewater treatment facility and retrofitting the first of two existing lagoon cells, and adding two lift stations in Stanley. About 45 kilometres of piping will be added to connect the nearby communities of Schanzenfeld and Reinfeld to the treatment system. The project, initially proposed in 2012, is currently in its second tender phase. The project was sent back to the design phase in 2022 after bids came in much higher than the $48 million that had been approved for the project. The new system will meet both federal and provincial environmental requirements and create more regional capacity for wastewater treatment. Winkler is one of Manitoba’s fastest growing municipalities, increasing its population from 14,000 to more than 21,000 in less than 10 years.
The federal government is investing more than $25.2 million in the project, with another $21 million coming from the province of Manitoba. The City of Winkler and RM of Stanley will contribute a combined $27.2 million.
