Niagara water treatment plants earn A+ from Ontario

Niagara Region’s six water treatment plants have earned a 100 per cent rating from the Ontarios’ ministry of the environment, conservation and parks following inspections during 2025 and 2026.

The ministry conducts scheduled and unannounced inspections of water treatment plants each year to ensure compliance with provincial regulations, a Niagara Region release said.

“A perfect score reflects Niagara Region’s ongoing commitment to not only meeting, but exceeding, the province’s multi-barrier, health-based drinking water quality standards,” the release said.

Inspections assess a variety of operational areas iin addition to water quality monitoring including reporting practices, record keeping, and staff certification and training.

“The confirmation that Niagara’s drinking water continues to rank among the best in Ontario is a great way to mark World Water Day this week. Achieving 100 per cent compliance reflects the dedication and professionalism of Niagara Region’s Water-Wastewater staff, who work every day to protect public health and deliver clean, safe, and reliable drinking water,” Niagara Region director of wastewater services Phil Lambert said.

Approximately 160 million litres of water is treated and delivered as clean drinking water every day, the release said, via a water-wastewater inventory that includes ix water plants, 11 wastewater plants and more than 100 pumping stations.
