Montreal homeowners urged to take flood precautions amid rising storm risks

As heavier rainstorms become more common in Montreal, homeowners are being advised to take preventative measures to protect against flooding, water damage and sewage backups.

Levine Bros. Plumbing, a century-old Montreal business, is encouraging residents to prepare before storms hit. Co-owner Ben Levine said there are several simple steps households can take to reduce flood risk and even lower insurance premiums.

Among the measures recommended: keeping gutters and downspouts clear, resealing window wells and doors, improving yard drainage, installing or maintaining backwater valves and ensuring sump pumps are in working order with backup power.

“Extreme weather is part of our reality,” Levine said. “Fortunately, there are several simple things you can do to prevent backups and flooding.”

The company is also offering free in-home consultations to help homeowners assess risks and identify solutions.

Montreal has faced repeated flooding in recent years as climate change increases the frequency of intense rainfall events. City officials and environmental groups have emphasized that household-level action, combined with broader infrastructure investment, will be key to limiting damage from future storms.
