Merritt, BC – The City of Merritt is asking its residents to conserve water by “all means possible” after a major equipment failure was detected on July 9.
The failure affects the south central B.C. city’s water supply, though it is not affecting water quality. City officials said a gasket on a main pump failed, sending a flood of water into an electrical panel.
Crews were working on the problem as of July 10. The main reason residents were being asked to conserve water is to ensure fire protection services have enough pressure to fight a fire if necessary.
The city of about 7,000 residents are in the midst of a heat wave as temperatures are expected to reach the mid- to high-30s for the foreseeable future.
