Federal, PEI governments invest upwards of $8.6 million for Charlottetown water infrastructure

The governments of Canada and Prince Edward Island announced funding of more than $8.6 million on Dec. 18 to develop water and wastewater infrastructure for a new development in Charlottetown, PEI.

The federal government is investing more than $4.3 million through the Canada Housing Infrastructure Fund (CHIF) and the provincial government will invest more than $4.3 million through the PEI Housing Corporation to develop essential water, wastewater and stormwater infrastructure for the Hillsborough Park Development.

“Today’s announcement demonstrates our shared commitment to making meaningful investments that will deliver future housing opportunities in Charlottetown. Working together with our partners, we are helping build and accelerate the delivery of more affordable homes that will bring stability, opportunity and a foundation for a more equitable future for Islanders,” federal parliamentary secretary to the minister of veterans affairs and associate minister of national defense Sean Casey said.

The project involves construction of a wastewater liftstation, installation of approximately 150 metres of wastewater forcemain, 1684 metres of sanitary pipe, 1763 metres of water pipe, and 2901 metres of stormwater pipe, as well as manholes and 3 catch basins of about 600 square metres each.

A partnership between Prince Edward Island and PEI First Nations states 10 per cent of building lots developed will be allocated as serviced land to PEI Indigenous communities.

“Today’s announcement is an important step in ensuring that development in Epekwitk (PEI) includes the Epekwitnewaq Mi’kmaq. Access to serviced land supports our communities’ housing needs and future planning. We appreciate this partnership and the recognition that meaningful reconciliation must be reflected in shared land use and opportunity,” Lennox Island First Nation Chief Tabatha Bernard said.

CHIF is designed to assist communities to build infrastructure infrastructure to increase housing density and funding can be used for projects that improve drinking water, wastewater, and stormwater systems, as well as initiatives that preserve existing capacity, enhance system reliability, or implement waste diversion measures to reduce landfill use, a provincial government news release said.
