Federal government invests in Atlantic Canada infrastructure

The 2025 federal budget’s Building Communities Strong Fund is bringing wastewater infrastructure upgrades to Bridgewater, NS along with drinking water improvements in Quispamsis, NB.

More than $2 million from the fund will go towards investment in a water distribution system expansion in Quispamsis to provide a safe and reliable source of drinking water.

The project will enable the development of up to 1055 housing units across eight development areas. In order to achieve that, the watermain network will be extended by 1.5 kilometres along Hampton Road, a Department of of Housing, Infrastructure and Communities release said.

The $948,000 in funding for Bridgewater will support replacement and upgrades of sanitary sewers on Jubilee Road to “improve services for existing residents and allow for future residential housing construction,” the release said.

“Building a strong Canada starts with building strong communities. With the new Build Communities Strong Fund, we are investing to build reliable infrastructure at a speed and scale not seen in generations – the roads, hospitals, schools, and water systems that support people, create jobs, and foster connected communities,” federal minister of housing and infrastructure and minister responsible for Pacific Economic Development Canada Gregor Robertson said.

The addition of municipal water infrastructure to Hampton Road ensures that our downtown core has access to a safe, clean, reliable water source. This is a key service we can offer in support of residential and commercial development to further our reputation as one of the most desirable communities in Canada in which to live and work,” Town of Quispamsis mayor Libby O’Hara said.

“The upgrades on Jubilee Road will mean better, more reliable service for the residents and businesses already here, while also opening the door for future growth. This project will not only improve service for homes along Jubilee Road and upstream, but also make room for new development, supporting both our current community and those moving here in the years ahead,” Bridgewater mayor David Mitchell added.
