EDMONTON – After discovering City of Edmonton properties, golf courses, and private cemeteries have not been paying stormwater bills, and in some cases didn’t even have accounts, Epcor said those in violation will soon have an additional bill to pay.
The utilities company said it will generate an additional $1.2 million once billing begins. Stormwater service is one line of Epcor’s water bill – the others include water usage, wastewater, and sanitary sewers.
Epcor said it discovered the unpaid services when it took over drainage services from the City of Edmonton is 2017. The properties were paying for water usage and wastewater services, but not stormwater services. While the additional bill will be unwelcome for some property owners, it will reduce the amount for those account holders who have been paying for stormwater services.
Epcor’s stormwater system includes wet and dry ponds, culverts, pipes, ditches, and catch basins.
Epcor identified the properties during an audit, and notified Edmonton’s city officials in 2022. The company held off until now to to allow for adequate notification to the affected properties.
