A new province-wide coalition has launched with the goal of restoring and protecting Alberta’s watersheds to build a more water-secure and climate-resilient future.
The Alberta Coalition for Watershed Security, led by the Alberta Ecotrust Foundation, brings together a diverse network of organizations to coordinate advocacy, build capacity and drive long-term systems change in water management across the province.
The coalition’s early priorities include advocating for the renewal of Alberta’s Watershed Resiliency and Restoration Program and developing a long-term water fund to support sustainable watershed health initiatives.
“Alberta faces increasing climate-related disasters, including floods, droughts and wildfires, which have cost over $4 billion since 2020,” said Lori Rissling Wynn, director of grants and initiatives at Alberta Ecotrust. “Investments in watershed and nature-based solutions are essential to reduce these risks and safeguard water security for future generations.”
The initiative is supported by the Calgary Foundation and operates under a collaborative governance model emphasizing inclusivity, transparency and cross-sector leadership. Alberta Ecotrust serves as the coalition’s secretariat.
The coalition’s launch comes amid growing concerns over climate resilience and the need for greater investment in nature-based infrastructure to mitigate the impacts of extreme weather events.
