Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) students through the Bruce Fellowships in Canadian Freshwater Policy have submitted an e-petition to the House of Commons to create a Canada Water Week.
The Bruce Fellowship, named after Canadian diplomat and federal public servant Geoffrey F. Bruce was established by his wife Erika v.C. Bruce to commemorate his commitment to environment and water resource policy in Canada. Since 2017, 18 Bruce Graduate Fellows have received funding support for their Masters and PhD research projects on a wide range of topics related to freshwater policy in Canada.
“Recognizing that celebrations and activities around World Water Day has mobilized individuals and groups in Canada for a number of years, our e-petition is based on the increasing need for water awareness, literacy, education, engagement and action by making Canada Water Week official,” Bruce Water Fellow Executive in Residence Michael Goffin said.
The e-petition notes March 22, the United Nations World Water Day, has raised global water awareness since 1993.
“World Water Day 2026 presents an opportunity for the resolution to be tabled and passed in theHouse of Commons to formally establish Canada Water Week,” Goffin said.
As of Feb. 19 there are 30 days available to gather signatures. The e-petition can be read and signed here.
