Bearspaw feeder main returns to service

The City of Calgary announced April 2 it has lifted water restrictions as the Bearspaw Feeder Main returns to service.

Since the feeder main was shut down on March 9, a City of Calgary release said, major work on the pipe was completed including reinforcing the nine highest risk segments, concrete work, backfilling and paving to restore work areas and replacing valves that were not fully operational.

The pipe was refilled, tested and returned to service in a controlled manner, the release added.

“We have reached a major milestone, but the pipe is still in poor condition and at risk of another issue or break until the new pipe is operational in December. We are not planning to reintroduce water restrictions until fall, when we’ll shut this pipe down again to connect the new pipe. But if another issue happens before then, we may need to bring back water restrictions sooner,” the release stated.

Water restrictions in Calgary as well as the neighbouring communities of  Airdrie, Chestermere, Strathmore and Tsuut’ina Nation allowed the city to operate the Glenmore water treatment plant at increased capacity and keep storage tanks full, the release said, with enough water available to respond to emergencies such as fires or additional water main breaks.
