Canada invests $50M for NWT water infrastructure projects

The Government of Canada announced funding of more than $44.9 million through the Canada Housing Infrastructure Fund (CHIF) to support water, wastewater and solid waste infrastructure projects across the Northwest Territories.

The approved projects support communities across the territory, including Behchokǫ̀, Colville Lake, Délı̨nę, Fort Good Hope, Fort Liard, Fort McPherson, Fort Providence, Fort Smith, Inuvik, Nahanni Butte, Sambaa K’e, Tsiigehtchic, Ulukhaktok and Yellowknife. Investments will support upgrades to water treatment plants, water storage and distribution systems, wastewater infrastructure, and solid waste facilities.

“Our community has been waiting for the infrastructure needed to support new homes. Upgrades to our water and waste systems mean more families can have safe, healthy places to live close to home. This funding is an important step forward for Behchokǫ̀, and we are proud to be part of this work alongside our partners.” said Chief Bertha Rabesca Zoe of Behchokǫ.

The projects are part of the Canada Housing Infrastructure Fund agreement between Canada and the Northwest Territories, which provides more than $74.2 million over nine years to support investments in drinking water, wastewater and solid waste infrastructure that enable housing development and help preserve existing homes.

“Communities across the Northwest Territories know that building more homes starts with having the right infrastructure in place. That’s why our government is investing more than $44.9 million through the Canada Housing Infrastructure Fund infrastructure that will enable the construction of more homes in communities across the Northwest Territories, from Ulukhaktok to Fort Smith and everywhere in between,” said Rebecca Alty, Minister of Crown-Indigenous Relations.
