Conservation Halton celebrated the re-opening of the newly reconstructed boardwalk at Crawford Lake Conservation Area with a ribbon-cutting event attended by government representatives, community partners, project partners and Conservation Halton leadership.
The re-opening marks an important milestone for Crawford Lake Conservation Area, part of UNESCO’s Niagara Escarpment World Biosphere Reserve. Originally constructed in 1965, the boardwalk was reconstructed to improve accessibility and access to Crawford Lake, while enhancing the overall visitor experience.
“The re-opening of the Crawford Lake boardwalk is a testament to what can be achieved when partners, funders, supporters and all levels of government unite around a shared vision for conservation, accessibility, education and exceptional community experiences,” said Chandra Sharma, president and CEO, Conservation Halton.
Funding for the project was generously provided through the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program’s (ICIP) Community, Culture and Recreation Stream, Rehabilitation and Renovation Intake. Through ICIP, the Government of Canada invested $912,000 and the Government of Ontario invested $759,924 toward the project, with additional funding from Halton Region’s Developer Contribution Reserve.
New signage, created in partnership with Conservation Halton’s Indigenous Partners Council, will be installed along the boardwalk later this month to help deepen visitors’ understanding of Crawford Lake, including its ecological significance, scientific importance and connections to Indigenous history and knowledge.
