Ontario invests $90k in Nairn and Hyman flood recovery

The government of Ontario is providing $90,000 to the Township of Nairn and Hyman in disaster recovery funding to help cover emergency response costs and critical infrastructure repairs due to flooding that occurred in July 2025.

The investment is being provided through the Municipal Disaster Recovery Assistance (MDRA) program, a government of Ontario release said.

“Our government continues to protect Ontario and support our municipal partners when they need it. While it is never easy to recover from unexpected natural disasters, this funding will help offset the costs of emergency response and repairs to damaged critical infrastructure, allowing the Township of Nairn and Hyman to rebuild stronger than ever,” provincial minister of municipal affairs and housing Rob Flack said.

On July 16, 2025, the Township of Nairn and Hyman experienced heavy rainfall, causing flooding across the municipality. 102 mm of rainfall was measured in the area by a local weather station over a 24-hour period, which Environment Canada indicated as a 1-in-75 to 1-in-100 year event.

The MDRA funding will help the Township cover the costs of repairing roads, culverts and other essential infrastructure damaged by the flooding, the release said.

Eligible expenses under the MDRA program may include operating and capital costs that are over and above regular municipal budgets and are directly linked to the disaster.

For a small municipality like ours, unexpected infrastructure failures place significant pressure on limited reserves. This funding allows us to recover from this event without placing the full financial burden on our taxpayers. We needed help and you came through for us. Thank you so much,” Township of Nairn and Hyman mayor Amy Mazey said.
