The Town of Coburg has completed construction of a new elevated water tank and booster pumping station, a project officials say will strengthen the reliability of the community’s drinking water system and support long-term growth.
Municipal leaders and staff from Lakefront Utilities Services Inc. (LUSI) gathered Wednesday with David Piccini, the MPP for Northumberland–Peterborough South, to mark the opening of the $3.6-million facility on D’Arcy street, just southeast of the Coburg Community Centre.
The 5,000-cubic-metre structure combines three major functions within a single building: a booster pumping station on the first floor, electrical and chemical infrastructure on the second, and telecommunications space on the third. The town says the integrated design improves efficiency, security and cost-effectiveness while allowing the booster station to operate independently from the tank if needed.
The tank also features a decorative lighting system that will allow the community centre to illuminate it for special occasions.
The project follows a 2022 study by LUSI, which identified the need for new storage and pumping capacity as outlined in Cobourg’s 2021 Drinking Water System Master Plan. The facility addresses storage constraints in the town’s lower-pressure Zone 1 and boosting limitations in Zone 2. Cobourg’s drinking water system draws from Lake Ontario and supplies the town and parts of Hamilton Township.
Federal and provincial governments contributed more than $3.5 million through the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program’s Green Infrastructure Stream, which supports projects aimed at improving water quality, reducing pollution and building climate resilience.
Federal Housing and Infrastructure Minister Gregor Robertson said the project demonstrates how upgrading green infrastructure can “strengthen communities, improve public services, and support sustainable growth.”
Ontario’s Acting Infrastructure Minister Todd McCarthy called the facility part of a broader effort to expand essential infrastructure across the province.
Cobourg Mayor Lucas Cleveland said the new tank and pumping station will “strengthen the reliability and safety of our drinking water system” while supporting future development.
LUSI president and CEO Dereck Paul said the integrated design sets “a new benchmark for efficiency and cost-effectiveness in water management” and will support the community for generations.
