Ontario awards East Gwillimbury over $1M for housing and water infrastructure

The Town of East Gwillimbury will receive $1,050,576 from the Ontario government through the second round of the Building Faster Fund, aimed at supporting municipalities that meet or exceed their provincial housing targets.

The town achieved 92 per cent of its 2024 housing goal by breaking ground on 328 new homes. The funding will be directed toward housing-enabling and community infrastructure, including upgrades to water, wastewater, and stormwater systems needed to support the growing population.

“Through the Building Faster Fund, we’re supporting towns like East Gwillimbury that are working hard to create more homes for families,” said Laura Smith, Parliamentary Assistant to the Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing. “By speeding up the approval process, we’re getting shovels in the ground faster — ensuring communities have the homes and infrastructure they need to grow and thrive.”

The fund is part of Ontario’s broader three-year, $1.2-billion initiative to accelerate housing construction by rewarding municipalities that advance development and build critical infrastructure.

“East Gwillimbury is committed to addressing the housing crisis and meeting the needs of our growing community,” said Mayor Virginia Hackson. “We appreciate the Ontario government’s support through the Building Faster Fund, which will help us continue to plan and build homes responsibly, while ensuring strong, complete communities for current and future residents.”

The funding supports upgrades to municipal systems that manage drinking water, wastewater, and stormwater, ensuring new housing developments are served by safe, reliable water infrastructure.

Ontario’s recent data shows the province saw 12,175 rental starts from January to July 2025, a 21 per cent increase over the same period in 2024, marking a record level for this time of year. Municipalities now have until 2028 to spend funds awarded through the program.
