Last Wednesday’s Council of the Federation results announced that Canada’s Premiers have endorsed what the Western Premiers agreed to back in June: a Canada-wide Water Charter.

The Premiers agreed to continue to support research, development, and adoption of innovative technologies to advance water conservation and quality. Premiers directed their Ministers to use the Water Charter (pdf), which recognizes “the collective obligation of Canadians and their governments to be responsible water stewards,” as a guide in their work.

Additionally, Premiers challenged individual Canadians, businesses and governments to reduce water consumption; increase water efficiency; and protect water quality.

Last year, the Council agreed to begin a Water Stewardship Council.
