York Regional Council received the 2024 Drinking Water Systems Memo sharing The Regional Municipality of York scored 100% in Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks drinking water system inspections.
Through everyday actions of highly skilled and professional staff, York Region continues to deliver high-quality water and maintain excellent compliance with regulatory requirements.
“York Region continues earning top scores for our drinking water, an important accomplishment and incredible service to our community health and well-being,” said Eric Jolliffe, York Region Chairman and CEO. “Access to safe, clean and reliable drinking water is often taken for granted as residents turn on the taps, not realizing York Region’s significant investments to maintain and improve systems, manage growth and achieve regulatory requirements.”
Under the Safe Drinking Water Act, 2002, York Region reports annually on quality and quantity of drinking water produced. York Region executes a robust and rigorous approach to protect drinking water which includes source water protection, operator training, water treatment, extensive monitoring and testing, as well as emergency preparedness and regular communication with local cities and towns.
York Region’s annual memo includes Ministry inspection results from the 2024 calendar year. All Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks inspections completed in 2024 received perfect scores, confirming York Region’s compliance to provincial standards.
“It is our duty to oversee municipal drinking water systems with such care and diligence,” said City of Richmond Hill Mayor, David West, Chair of Public Works – Environmental Services. “The Region collaborates with local cities, towns and neighbouring municipalities to ensure drinking water continues to meet high standards. Collectively, we also focus on financial sustainability, asset management, risk mitigation and continuous improvement to meet current and future drinking water demands.”
Water is delivered through a two-tiered water system. York Region operates and maintains 15 drinking water supply systems, providing water to all nine local cities and towns. In turn, cities and towns are responsible for designing, constructing, operating and maintaining their distribution systems to deliver high quality water to residents and businesses.
