Timmins council approves 5.5% increase to 2026 water, wastewater budget

Timmins city council has approved a 5.53 per cent increase to the 2026 water and wastewater budget, aligning with its 10-year financial plan and continuing a one per cent capital levy to help fund major infrastructure projects.

For an average five-room home, the change represents an annual increase of $27 for water, $40 for wastewater and $15.61 for the capital levy—about $82.61 more per year, or roughly $6.88 more per month on the household utility bill.

The city has earmarked about $8.1 million in net capital expenditures for water and wastewater projects in 2026. Major work includes the two-year Tisdale Reservoir replacement project, ongoing subdivision development scheduled over the next three years, and upgrades tied to the Bob’s Lake Lagoon diversion project.

Council also approved underground replacements on two sections of the Connecting Link: Segment 9 from Brunette Road to Highway 655, and Segment 13 from Crawford Street to the Porcupine River Bridge.

The city says the investments are necessary to support future population growth, improve system reliability and address aging infrastructure. Timmins currently operates roughly 220 kilometres of watermains and 181 kilometres of sanitary sewer mains.
