Ontario invests $18.7M in Nunavut infrastructure, water systems

The federal government is providing more than $18.7 million to Nunavut this year to support local infrastructure projects, with a focus on upgrading essential services such as drinking water and wastewater systems.

The funding, delivered through the Canada Community-Building Fund, will be administered by the Government of Nunavut in partnership with communities across the territory. Officials said the investments are intended to help support future housing growth by ensuring communities have reliable water and other core infrastructure.

“Building a strong Canada starts with building strong communities,” said The Honourable Rebecca Chartrand, Minister of Northern and Arctic Affairs. “We are proud to invest in the critical infrastructure that helps Inuit and all Nunavummiut advance local priorities and support long-term growth.”

Nunavut Community Services Minister David Akeeagok said the funding will support “resilient, responsive, and community-driven” projects, helping communities “build the infrastructure they need to grow and connect.”

The program supports a broad range of projects from water systems to recreation facilities and waste management. Through the Canada Community-Building Fund, the federal government is committing $26.7 billion between 2024 and 2034 for infrastructure projects nationwide. In 2025–26, $2.5 billion will be distributed to 3,700 communities, including $18.7 million to Nunavut. Since 2015, more than $218 million has been invested in the territory through the fund.
