Federal government, Halifax invest more than $3.6M in flood protection for Fall River, N.S.

The federal government and the Halifax Regional Municipality are investing more than $3.6 million to improve flood protection along Highway 2 in Fall River, a corridor that regularly experiences flooding during heavy rainfall.

The project will upgrade and expand the capacity of the existing drainage system at three locations along Highway 2 to better manage increased stormwater flows. The affected sections run from Holland Road to Howe Avenue, from Coach Avenue to No. 3476 Highway 2, and from Fall River Road to Miller Lane.

Federal officials said the work is intended to reduce the risk of flooding to nearby homes, private property and critical transportation infrastructure as extreme weather events become more frequent and severe.

The federal government is contributing about $1.46 million to the project through the Disaster Mitigation and Adaptation Fund (DMAF), while the Halifax Regional Municipality is providing about $2.19 million.

“Extreme weather events cause damage to both private property and public infrastructure alike,” said Braedon Clark, Member of Parliament for Sackville–Bedford–Preston, in a statement. He said the investment will help ensure homes and roads are better protected against flooding caused by heavy rainfall.

Halifax Mayor Andy Fillmore said strengthening stormwater infrastructure is key to building climate-resilient communities and supporting sustainable growth.

The investment is part of the federal government’s broader disaster mitigation efforts. Since 2018, the federal government has committed more than $3.8 billion to the Disaster Mitigation and Adaptation Fund, with over $3 billion announced for more than 120 projects nationwide.

Federal funding for the Fall River project is conditional on the signing of a contribution agreement.
