Sumant Patel is a seasoned leader in the water and wastewater sector with over 12 years of municipal experience. As Manager of Wastewater Services Operations for the City of Guelph, and in his prior roles with the City of Toronto, he has guided critical infrastructure programs, including the city’s largest integrated pumping station project, the implementation of advanced UV disinfection systems, and the design and construction of the Biosolids Management Facility. He prioritizes energy efficiency, resource recovery, the circular economy, process optimization and strategic asset management to balance rapid urban growth with regulatory compliance and long-term resilience.
As a past chair of the Utility Management Committee and currently serving on the Board of Directors for the Water Environment Association of Ontario (WEAO), Sumant collaborates with key industry stakeholders to advance policy updates, modernize governance, and strengthen coordination with the provincial government and utility leaders. His work helps ensure that WEAO recommendations translate into practical, resilient practices that enhance water and wastewater operations across Ontario.
A committed lifelong learner, Sumant holds multiple certifications: Certified Engineering Technologist (C.E.T.) and Municipal Infrastructure Contract Administrator (MICA) designations from OACETT, MECP Class IV Wastewater Treatment Operator License, and a Leadership Series Graduate Certificate. He actively mentors emerging professionals, champions inclusive leadership, and contributes to the development of innovative, sustainable solutions for Ontario’s water systems.
