Newfoundland and Labrador will begin construction this fall on a new breakwater in Trepassey to protect the coastal community from future storm damage.
The project comes in response to a series of severe weather events that have damaged infrastructure and disrupted daily life in the region. The province said the tender for the breakwater construction will be awarded soon, with work set to begin as soon as possible.
Provincial officials have been working closely with the Town of Trepassey to develop updated engineering plans for the project. The Department of Transportation and Infrastructure said the initiative is part of a broader effort to build climate-resilient infrastructure and safeguard coastal communities.
“This new breakwater is a critical investment in helping build a safer community for residents of Trepassey,” said Barry Petten, Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure. “We’re proud to fully fund this project and ensure it’s built to last.”
Loyola O’Driscoll, Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture and MHA for Ferryland, said the condition of the community’s existing breakwater has been a long-standing concern.
“The people of Trepassey have waited a long time for this crucial announcement, and I’m proud to see our efforts delivering safer communities for all of us,” O’Driscoll said.
