Construction is set to begin on the North Calgary Water Servicing project, a major infrastructure initiative designed to deliver clean, safe and reliable drinking water to existing and future communities in the city’s northwest.
The multi-year project will see the installation of a 22-kilometre feeder main and ten supporting facilities, including new pump stations, expansions to underground reservoirs and tie-ins to existing infrastructure at the Bearspaw Water Treatment Plant. Once completed, the system will be capable of delivering 100 million litres of drinking water per day, with long-term capacity expected to reach 410 million litres per day when a new water treatment plant is built.
“The North Calgary Water Servicing project is a key step in supporting Calgary’s continued growth,” said Melanie Gray, Senior Project Engineer and program manager for the project. “It not only ensures a reliable supply of clean, safe drinking water for communities in the northwest, but also strengthens our overall system by adding critical redundancy. This means we can continue delivering essential water services even when existing feeder mains or pump stations are out of service in the event of emergency or planned repairs.”
The new feeder main will extend north from the Bearspaw Water Treatment Plant near Stoney Trail and Nose Hill Drive, crossing under Crowchild Trail to 144 Avenue N.W., where it will connect to the Northridge Feeder Main. Construction is starting at two primary locations: one along Country Hills Boulevard and Rocky Ridge Road within the site of the new Rocky Ridge Athletic Park, and another along Rocky Ridge Road north of the Shane Homes YMCA to 144 Avenue N.W.
Work is also starting on the first two support facilities—one at the Bearspaw Water Treatment Plant and another at the existing Top Hill Reservoir. The feeder main is expected to be completed by the end of 2028, with facility construction and commissioning to follow in 2029.
The North Calgary Water Servicing project is part of a broader effort to expand Calgary’s water transmission capacity. Other key projects include the South Calgary Water Servicing project slated for completion in 2021, the Crosstie Feeder Main planned to be complete in 2029, improvements to the Bearspaw South Feeder Main and a new water treatment plant now in conceptual design.
