Adjala-Tosorontio secures $35M in provincial funding for wastewater infrastructure upgrades

The Township of Adjala-Tosorontio has secured a grant of $34,999,995.00 from the Province of Ontario through the Municipal Housing Infrastructure Program (MHIP). This substantial investment will enable critical upgrades to the Township’s wastewater infrastructure, supporting environmental protection and sustainable housing development.

The Provincial funding will reduce the burden on Adjala-Tosorontio residents by facilitating the decommissioning of the aging New Horizons Wastewater Treatment Plant—long recognized as an environmental concern by both the Township and the Ministry of the Environment—and the construction of a new, state-of-the-art wastewater treatment facility in the community of Everett.

“In the face of economic uncertainty, our government is investing in the future for the people of Ontario by doubling down on our plan to build,” said Kinga Surma, Minister of Infrastructure. “With our additional investments in the MHIP, we’re unlocking more housing and building critical infrastructure that will protect communities, keep workers on the job and lay the groundwork for a stronger economy.”

The new facility is essential to meeting the provincial mandate to accelerate housing development while protecting the environment by reducing risks to surrounding ecosystems. It will also ensure full compliance with Ministry of the Environment standards, which is critical for securing approvals for residential development.

“I want to congratulate Mayor Scott Anderson, the Council and the senior administration team at Adjala-Tosorontio on securing this critical funding for this important infrastructure project,” said Brian Saunderson, MPP for Simcoe-Grey. “Our Government is committed to working with our municipal partners to enable the development of much needed housing in Simcoe-Grey and across the Province.”

This landmark project reflects the Township’s ongoing commitment to fostering a resilient, thriving, and environmentally responsible community.

“This provincial funding removes a long-standing environmental impediment and paves the way for responsible growth in our community,” said Mayor Scott W. Anderson. “Through the dedication of Township staff, collaboration with development partners, and the support of multiple provincial ministries, we are building the foundation for sustainable growth that will benefit Adjala-Tosorontio for generations to come. The Township extends its sincere thanks to the Province of Ontario for recognizing the importance of this investment and its positive impact on our residents.”
