Vaughan stormwater project earns engineering award

A City of Vaughan project that modernized stormwater infrastructure in Gallanough Park has won top honours from Professional Engineers of Ontario’s York Chapter.

The Gallanough Park Stormwater Management Improvements project received the 2024 Engineering Project of the Year Award, which recognizes technical excellence and community impact.

The initiative included construction of an underground stormwater management facility, a storm relief sewer, and an overland stormwater relief path. City officials say the upgrades will reduce flooding risks, improve the quality of water entering local waterways, and help the stormwater system withstand increasingly severe weather.

“This is an incredible achievement, and it showcases the importance of strategic and meaningful city-building projects,” said Vaughan Mayor Steven Del Duca.

Beyond infrastructure upgrades, the project also incorporated environmental enhancements. Naturalized landscaping and design improvements increased biodiversity and habitat in the park, creating a more sustainable and accessible public space for residents.

Vince Musacchio, Vaughan’s deputy city manager of planning and infrastructure development, said the recognition highlights staff and partners’ efforts to balance flood protection with ecological benefits.

“By modernizing infrastructure in a way that also enhances the park’s natural environment, we are protecting our community from flooding, improving water quality and creating a more sustainable space for residents to enjoy,” Musacchio said.

The award underscores Vaughan’s broader commitment to investing in resilient infrastructure as the city continues to grow and adapt to climate change.
