The Town of Stony Plain, Alberta, is moving forward with construction of the Brickyard Stormwater Management Facility thanks to more than $1 million in provincial funding through the Local Growth and Sustainability Grant (LGSG) awarded by the former Minister of Municipal Affairs, the Honourable Ric McIver. This infrastructure investment will support new residential development in the Brickyard in Old Town South Redevelopment and ensure long-term stormwater resilience for the surrounding area.
The Honourable Searle Turton, MLA for Spruce Grove – Stony Plain, joined municipal leaders and developer today on behalf of the Government of Alberta to officially announce the project.
“This project is a major milestone in our community’s growth,” says Mayor William Choy. “The Brickyard Stormwater Management Facility is not only critical for unlocking future housing, but it also demonstrates how strategic infrastructure can support sustainability, resilience, and quality of life for generations to come.”
The new facility will provide essential stormwater storage and control capacity, enabling development of low- and medium-density housing and community amenities in a growing part of Stony Plain. The investment supports the Town’s 2025–2028 Strategic Plan and aligns with long-term regional planning priorities.
“The Brickyard facility is an important component of future development in this area,” says Brett Newstead, General Manager of Planning and Infrastructure. “This pond construction will facilitate the community growth for needed housing and recreation infrastructure for the Town of Stony Plain.”
The stormwater facility also plays a critical role in advancing the Town’s long-term vision for the Old Town South Redevelopment project—a transformative initiative to revitalize one of Stony Plain’s most historic neighbourhoods. By enabling new residential growth and supporting future community amenities like schools and recreation spaces, the facility provides essential infrastructure moving the Old Town South Redevelopment project from vision to reality.
MLA Searle Turton says, “This significant investment will help support the growth of our community by providing the essential infrastructure needed to facilitate new housing and commercial developments such as the Brickyard in Old Town South. Our region is one of the fastest growing areas in the province, and it is essential we be able to provide the services needed to prove Stony Plain is an incredible place to invest, live and play.”
The Brickyard in Old Town South is being developed by TACADA, and they’ve been working closely with the Town of Stony Plain to deliver a complete community. The stormwater facility will be located north of 57 Avenue and west of Brickyard Drive, serving the greater Brickyard area.
“We’re proud to work in partnership with the Province and the Town of Stony Plain on the development of a shared stormwater management facility for the Brickyard,” says Greg Hembroff, Development Manager with TACADA. “This collaboration across all levels of government reflects a shared commitment to smart, efficient infrastructure that benefits the whole community. By consolidating stormwater facilities, we’re unlocking more programmable space for schools, recreation, and amenities—helping to make Stony Plain one of the most attractive places to live in the region.”
Construction is expected to begin later this year, in compliance with the LGSG program requirement.
